And it turns out that when that REG_EXPAND_SZ value is exported, it is done in Hex(2) - I'm sure that makes sense to someone. The only way I found (so far, and I've stopped looking) is to create a batch file with REG ADD commands, which allows one to specify the value type (or from the command line, but that leaves no record for future use). Amazing and stupid disappointing (in my view). Simple, I think: just change the default value (containing the Powershell command) to REG_EXPAND_SZ - not so fast! It apparently can't be done, certainly not in the Regedit GUI. reg file had the menu entry in hex, so set about creating my own reg entries by hand (within the regedit GUI) to test - until I discovered that with a default REG_SZ string, env vars are not expanded. ![]() Thanks Keith! Even though it isn't for me, I thought I'd test your method, and that led to a world of pain (sort of) as I discovered slowly how to 'escape' chrs to prevent early environment variable expansion and to pass " marks intact. ![]()
